His final proof of FLT was based on a huge amount of prior work by others. But he spent 7 years in his attic working on his proof. It was about 100 pages of extremely high level math, probably accessible to less than 100 people on earth. The proof could not have been done without the mathematic machinery developed over the last century. Just because every community acts like a group, just like other groups do in politics, sports, ballroom dance, etc. There is this sociological dimension to be taken into account. Dimension hardly visible from the inside, but very much from outside, I testify! :)Frank Neuberthttps://twitter.com/newbert_franknoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174226243054636195.post-87831993877454445232015-04-06T22:49:17.924-04:002015-04-06T22:49:17.924-04:00When I was a kid I was encouraged to go into math ...When I was a kid I was encouraged to go into math because I was "good at it", and I shied away because I didn't want to be in a dim room scrabbling at blackboards for the rest of my life. That, and I was pretty sure I wasn't nearly as smart as people thought.

Thanks for this post. I had no idea physics was so social! That's one of the things that makes discussion so useful -- it can spark creativity and stimulate the mind to think about a problem in new ways.AstroKatiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04140029388144103669noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2174226243054636195.post-26041149249053295782013-06-02T06:57:33.197-04:002013-06-02T06:57:33.197-04:00Hello Katie,

I just want to add that even if as a scientist you need to keep in touch with some else's ideas and konowledges in order to learn, debate or compare with yours,(by attending cogreses, workshops, mails, reading texbooks, etc) in the very moment of doing creative Science, and Science is a creative task, you create from yoursef, even among others in a discussion. It sounds obvious but it is not, in my opinion. Best regards. J Burgos Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
